Total Sonics’ origins can be traced back to the early 1980s at dbx, Inc., a hub for a diverse array of innovative audio designs and products. Among Total Sonics’ notable creations are dbx compressors (such as the renowned dbx 160 and its variations), which remain highly valued and sought-after. These compressors are widely employed in recording studios and live performances.
One of dbx, Inc.’s significant achievements was the development of the Emmy®-award-winning dbx-tv noise-reduction system, which became an integral component of the BTSC (Broadcast Television Standard Committee) transmission system. BTSC was established as the standard for analog TV-audio broadcasts in North America in 1984, quickly adopted by numerous other countries. This innovation enabled millions of consumers to enjoy stereo TV audio with exceptional fidelity, even in fringe reception areas.
In 1989, dbx, Inc. underwent division into several entities, with three enduring today. The first entity to emerge from dbx, Inc. was THAT Corporation. Founded by three former dbx, Inc. engineers, THAT specialized in designing and marketing circuit-board-level implementations of dbx Inc.’s technology, along with advanced analog ICs for audio applications. THAT’s initial offerings included circuit boards for integrating the dbx-tv noise reduction system into professional broadcast equipment, as well as voltage-controlled amplifier (VCA) and rms-level detector ICs for pro audio equipment manufacturers. Presently, those same three engineers continue to serve as the primary owners and managers of THAT.
Following THAT’s spinoff, the professional products division of dbx, Inc. was acquired by AKG, subsequently joining Harman International. Alongside renowned brands like AKG, JBL, Soundcraft, and Studer, dbx Professional Audio Products became a prominent component of Harman’s professional audio portfolio.
In 1994, THAT Corporation acquired the dbx-tv licensing program, reuniting some of the original engineers with the technology they helped develop. Since then, THAT has significantly expanded Total Sonics’ scope, introducing new digital iterations of legacy technology. Most recently, THAT introduced a new technology suite (Total Cal and Total Immersion) designed to address common audio challenges encountered in modern broadcast reception.
Rooted in its dbx-tv heritage, Total Sonics remains committed to innovation, continually redefining audio experiences for broadcasters and consumers alike. Beginning with groundbreaking solutions like the dbx-tv noise-reduction system, Total Sonics now offers comprehensive audio processing and calibration solutions to elevate sound quality across various platforms and devices. With Total Sonics, users can anticipate exceptional audio performance, underpinned by decades of expertise and innovation.
